Sridhar Bhagavathula is a Madison-based flutist bent on bringing his unique personality to any music he plays. As a member of the Madison Flute Club, he performs with their flute choir and chamber ensemble in formal and outreach concerts in the area. He also serves as a board member for the club. His love of many musics led him to form Duo Tárrega with guitarist and composer Steve Waugh, playing a broad range of standard repertoire and original arrangements. They perform regularly at the Lakeside Street Coffee House and have been featured in the First Unitarian Society's Noon Musicale series, for broadcast on WORT. With flutists Berlinda Lopez and Alea Erickson, he plays in the Ovidius Trio, performing traditional and contemporary repertoire by composers such as Friedrich Kuhlau and Nicole Chamberlain. The Ovidius Trio was featured in the 15th annual Wisconsin Flute Festival at UW-Whitewater.
Sridhar enjoys teaching, and maintains a private lesson studio in Madison. He has previously held teaching positions in San Antonio, Texas, where he was the sectional and masterclass teacher at Ed Rawlinson Middle School and Tom C. Clark High School, in addition to teaching privately.
Sridhar studied under Thomas Robertello at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he received the Premier Young Artist Award. He continued under Jean Ferrandis at École Normale Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Ferrandis said of him that he is "one of the brightest students I've ever had; he has a fantastic sense of structure about the music and is always honest about what he thinks the composer wants to express”. He has also studied intensively in Tignes, France, with András Adorján and has participated in masterclasses with Molly Barth, Jasmine Choi, and Gergely Ittzés.
When he isn’t making music, he can be found reading, writing, and constructing crossword puzzles. We have also heard reports that he can blow one's brains out by cooking the spiciest food on this side of the galaxy and following it up with a mean Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, though we do not yet know from where he gets that Old Janx Spirit.
